What a gully is (and what "cleaning" actually means)

A gully is the grated chamber at ground level that collects surface water and channels it into the surface-water drain or combined sewer. On a road or car park you'll see them at the kerb edges; on a commercial forecourt they're set into the paving; on a domestic property they usually sit at the base of a rainwater downpipe and often take the kitchen sink waste too. Every gully has a trap at the bottom — a small pool of water that stops sewer gas coming back up.

The jet-vac process, step by step

1. Site survey and access setup. Vehicle positioned, cones and signage set out where needed, gully grates lifted safely.
2. Initial vacuum. Standing water and loose debris removed from the chamber straight into the truck's holding tank — nothing spilled to ground or washed further down the network.
3. High-pressure jetting. Silt, hydrocarbon build-up and root-fine debris broken up with directed jets inside the chamber and along the outflow pipe.
4. Full extraction. Loosened material vacuumed out to the trap base — leaving the gully clean, not just moved-around.
5. Outflow verification. Water tested through the outflow to confirm the pipe is running freely; camera inspection where the site requires it.
6. Written report. Condition on arrival, work carried out, condition after, and any defects observed — suitable for maintenance records or adoption submission.

How often should gullies be cleaned?

As a working baseline: annual cleaning for standard commercial and industrial sites; six-monthly for sites with heavy leaf-fall or high silt loading (car parks under trees, unfinished ground nearby, high-traffic forecourts); ad-hoc reactive cleaning between scheduled visits if a gully starts to hold water visibly. Adopted highways run on the local authority's own cycle; private estates aiming for comparable performance should target the same frequency.

The most common reason a "clean" gully starts holding water early is that a previous provider skimmed the grate rather than emptying to trap depth — the silt below the water line was never removed and the chamber refills within weeks. A proper jet-vac clean resets that.
